Coin Description

This magnificent 2-ounce pure silver coin was issued by the Royal Canadian Mint as part of the "Creatures of the North" series. Launched in 2020, this collection explores rich Canadian folklore by bringing to life legendary creatures that have haunted imaginations for centuries .

The werewolf is the second creature in the series, following the formidable Kraken of 2020 . This coin is part of a tradition of tales dating back to New France, where early French settlers reported legends of terrifying beasts . In July 1767, the Quebec Gazette already warned the population about a werewolf posing as a beggar .

The reverse design is by artist Gerald Gloade, who masterfully captured the power and terror of this legendary creature .

This coin incorporates advanced security features from the Royal Canadian Mint:

  • Precise radial lines on the background, creating a light diffraction pattern

  • Laser-micro-engraved maple leaf containing the number "21", visible only under magnification

Inscriptions include "CANADA", "FINE SILVER 2 OZ ARGENT PUR" and the purity "9999". The designer's initials "GG" appear at the bottom of the design .

Historical Context

The legend of the werewolf in Canada has its roots in 18th century France. The famous Beast of Gévaudan, which caused hundreds of deaths in southern France, prompted King Louis XV to offer a bounty for its head . French settlers brought this legend to New France (now Quebec), where the creature is still known as the loup-garou . The Acadians also carried the myth with them to Louisiana, where the Rougarou is said to haunt the bayous .

BU Quality

Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) coins feature a sharp strike, original luster, and surfaces free of circulation marks. This 2-ounce coin is a spectacular addition for any investor or collector attracted to North American folklore and supernatural themes.
