2009 Canada 25 Cents - Sledge Hockey
Vancouver Series 2010 — MS-67 Quality (Superb Gem)
Description of the room
This 25-cent coin pays tribute to sledge hockey, a Paralympic sport in which Canada excels through its tenacity and talent. Achieving MS-67 grade is exceptional for a coin in this series. Out of a mintage of 22.4 million, only a tiny fraction of the coins manage to maintain such pristine condition, free from the usual micro-marks from shipping.
The Reverse Pattern
Glenn Green's design captures the athlete in action, maneuvering his sled with visible power. In this "Superb Gem" grade, the engraving precision is absolute: every groove on the gloves, every detail of the sled, and the fine texture of the maple leaf in the background are rendered with photographic clarity. The Vancouver 2010 Paralympic Games logo is displayed with perfect clarity.
The Obverse
The obverse features the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt.1 At this level of preservation, the fields are incredibly sharp, almost comparable to a specimen strike, with a satin-like strike luster that presents no visual interruption.
Quality and Grade MS-67 (Superb Gem)
The MS-67 grade designates a Museum quality piece:
-
Luster: An exceptional striking luster, deep and perfectly uniform.
-
Surface: Virtually free of any contact marks. Even under collector's magnification (10x), the piece appears almost immaculate.
-
Strike: A powerful and centered execution, typical of the first coins struck with a new set of dies.
-
Visual appeal: A piece that instantly stands out due to its brilliance and physical perfection.
