2009 Canada: 25 cents Women's Hockey (Vancouver 2010) - Standard Version
Quality BU (Brilliant Uncirculated) — Grade: MS-63 CHOICE
Coin Description
This commemorative 25-cent coin was issued on November 17, 2009, by the Royal Canadian Mint to celebrate the Canadian Women's Hockey team's gold medal at the Salt Lake City Olympics in 2002 . This historic achievement was ranked as the second greatest Canadian Winter Olympic moment in an online vote held by the Royal Canadian Mint and the Canadian Olympic Broadcast Media Consortium . Of a total mintage of 22,000,000 coins put into circulation, only 3,000,000 were produced in a colored version, while the standard (uncolored) version accounts for the rest of the production . The offered coin, graded MS-63 Choice, features remarkable preservation with superior visual appeal.
The Obverse (Effigy of Queen Elizabeth II)
The obverse features the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Canadian artist Susanna Blunt, an effigy used on Canadian coins from 2003 to 2023. In keeping with commemorative coins of this period, the obverse is adorned with the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics logo. The legend "ELIZABETH II 25 CENTS CANADA 2009" surrounds the royal bust . For an MS-63 Choice grade, the mint luster is well present, intense and uniform over almost the entire surface, with a beautiful "cartwheel" effect. Contact marks are minimal and barely visible to the naked eye.
The Reverse (Hockey Players Celebrating Victory)
The reverse, designed by Burlington, Ontario artist Jason Bouwman , illustrates a moment of pure joy: two hockey players raising their arms in victory, celebrating their gold medal. A stylized maple leaf serves as the backdrop for this emotional scene . Unlike the colored version, this standard version does not feature color on the maple leaf, offering a cleaner yet equally symbolic design. The inscriptions "2002 WOMEN'S HOCKEY FÉMININ" and the Canadian Olympic Committee logo complete the reverse . In MS-63 Choice, all details of the players, their posture, and the maple leaf are perfectly sharp and well-struck, with no wear.
