1982 Canada 1 Dollar - Constitution
Pure Nickel — MS-66 Grade (Gem +)
Description of the room
This commemorative dollar celebrates the repatriation of the Constitution of Canada, the historic act by which the country achieved full legal sovereignty. Achieving MS-66 grade for a pure nickel one-dollar coin is an extremely rare feat of preservation. Due to their weight (over 15 g) and large diameter, these coins almost inevitably suffered contact marks when dropped into the Mint's sorting bins; this example is one of the rare exceptions to have survived in near-perfect condition.
The Reverse Pattern
Robert-Ralph Carmichael's work illustrates the historic signing of the Constitution in Ottawa. In Gem+ quality, the precision of the figures, chairs, and architectural details of Parliament is breathtaking. The contrast between the satin sheen of the reliefs and the purity of the fields highlights every line of the engraving, including the inscription "CONSTITUTION" and the dates "1867-1982".
The Obverse
The obverse features the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Arnold Machin. At this grade, the portrait is absolutely crisp, free from the hairline scratches often found on nickel. The luster is bright, uniform, and without any tarnish.
Quality and Grade MS-66 (Gem +)
The MS-66 grade designates a superior quality specimen:
-
Chandelier: An exceptional striking chandelier, brilliant and completely intact on both sides.
-
Surface: The surfaces are remarkably clean. Only microscopic marks, invisible without high magnification, may be present.
-
Strike: An "early strike" (corner start) that offers details of a depth and clarity not found on standard strikes.
-
Visual appeal: A showpiece whose brilliance and technical perfection make it one of the best known examples for this year of production.
