1982 Canada 1 Dollar - Constitution

Pure Nickel — MS-62 (BU) Grade

Description of the room

This commemorative coin highlights the repatriation of the Constitution of Canada, a major historical event that granted the country the full power to amend its own fundamental law. It remains one of the most collected nickel dollar coins due to its political significance and detailed design.

The Reverse Pattern

Designed by artist Robert-Ralph Carmichael (creator of the famous Common Loon motif), the reverse depicts the historic scene of the signing of the Constitution in front of the Centre Block of the Parliament Buildings in Ottawa. The word "CONSTITUTION" is above the composition, while the dates "1867-1982" mark the link between Confederation and this act of sovereignty.

The Obverse

The obverse features a portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Arnold Machin. The relief is typical of nickel strikes from this decade, offering a robust appearance and a characteristic satin finish.

Quality and Grade MS-62 (BU)

The MS-62 grade designates a non-circulating coin of above-average quality:

  • Luster: The original luster of the Mint is clearly present and uniform across the entire surface.

  • Surface: Although contact marks or bag marks are present, they are less numerous or less distracting than on an MS-60 example.

  • Appearance: The piece retains a solid visual appeal, without any signs of wear, indicating minimal handling since it came off the press.
