1965 Canada 1 Dollar - Small Pearl Variety

80% Silver — PL-66 Quality (Proof-Like)

Description of the room

The 1965 dollar is a must-have coin for variety collectors. This particular example is distinguished by its obverse design, specifically the size and position of the pearls bordering the portrait, making it a much more sought-after version than the common version with large pearls.

The Small Pearls Variety

On this version, the pearls around the edge of the obverse are thinner and slightly further from the rim (the edge of the coin). Another reliable indicator for this variety is the shape of the number 5 in the date on the reverse, which has a sharp point. This combination is particularly prized when preserved in its original minting condition.

The Reverse Pattern

The reverse features Emanuel Hahn's famous "Voyageur" design. It depicts a traveler and an Indigenous guide crossing Canadian waters by canoe, laden with bundles of furs. The landscape is completed by a wild island and stylized lines evoking the aurora borealis, a powerful symbol of the exploration of the Canadian North.

Quality and Grade PL-66

The PL-66 (Proof-Like) grade indicates a "Gem" quality coin with a mirror finish. The fields are highly reflective, the result of striking with specially polished dies at the Royal Canadian Mint. At this level of preservation, the coin shows only minimal contact marks, and its original luster remains perfectly intact.
