2009 Canada 25 Cents - Sledge Hockey

Vancouver Series 2010 — MS-65 (Gem) Quality

Description of the room

This 25-cent coin is a vibrant tribute to Paralympic athletes. Sledge hockey is one of the most demanding and popular disciplines at the Winter Games. Achieving MS-65 grade for a circulation coin signifies rarity, as it means the coin survived the high-speed minting and industrial packaging process without significant damage.

The Reverse Pattern

Designed by Glenn Green, the motif captures the physicality of sledge hockey. The player is leaning forward, illustrating the strength required to maneuver the sledge while controlling the puck. The stylized maple leaf in the background and the Vancouver 2010 Paralympic Games logo complete this dynamic artwork. In Gem quality, every detail of the player's equipment is exceptionally clear.

The Obverse

The obverse features a portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt. The luster is bright and uninterrupted across the entire field of the coin, a crucial element for grade 65.

Quality and Grade MS-65 (Gem)

An MS-65 is considered a highly prized collector's item:

  • Luster: The striking luster is complete, bright and without any trace of tarnish.

  • Surface: Very few contact marks are present. Those that exist are microscopic and are not located on the main areas of interest (such as the player's face or the Queen's portrait).

  • Visual appeal: Exceptional. The coin has a "fresh" visual presence as if it had just come off the mint's dies.
