2003-P 25 cents New Effigy AU

2003 Canada: 25 cents New Effigy (Susanna Blunt)
AU Quality (About Uncirculated)

Description of the room

This 25-cent coin, dated 2003, is special in more ways than one. It marks the transition to the new effigy of Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt, while retaining Emanuel Hahn's iconic caribou on the reverse. The example shown is in AU (About Uncirculated) condition, a grade that designates a coin that has circulated very lightly, retaining the vast majority of its original luster with minute scuff marks on the high points of the relief. .

The Obverse (New Effigy of Queen Elizabeth II)

The obverse features the newly unveiled portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, created by Canadian artist Susanna Blunt. It is distinguished by the absence of a crown and a more understated, contemporary depiction of the Sovereign. The inscription reads "ELIZABETH II D • G • REGINA," along with the date "2003" and the mint mark "P" (for plated steel). In AU quality, the luster is still very present in the fields, but very slight wear can be observed on the highest points of the portrait, such as the cheekbones or the jaw.

The Reverse (Caribou)

The reverse, unchanged, features the classic caribou design created by Emanuel Hahn and used on Canadian currency since 1937. The animal's head is finely detailed, surrounded by the word "CANADA," the face value "25 CENTS," and the year "2003." For an AU-grade coin, the caribou design is still quite sharp, with only minimal signs of wear on the antlers or muzzle.

Condition: AU (About Uncirculated)

  • Luster: The original striking luster is still largely present and visible, but may be interrupted by slight handling marks.

  • Surface: Wear is minimal and concentrated only on the highest points of the relief (Queen's cheek, caribou's antlers). No deep marks or major scratches are visible to the naked eye.

  • Visual appeal: An ideal transitional coin for the collector seeking a higher-quality coin than the current circulation version, at a more accessible price than a BU/MS example. It offers an excellent compromise between "mint" and circulated condition.
