This 25-cent coin, dated 2003, is special in more ways than one. It marks the transition to the new effigy of Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt, while retaining Emanuel Hahn's iconic caribou on the reverse. The example shown is in AU (About Uncirculated) condition, a grade that designates a coin that has circulated very lightly, retaining the vast majority of its original luster with minute scuff marks on the high points of the relief. .
The Obverse (New Effigy of Queen Elizabeth II)
The obverse features the newly unveiled portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, created by Canadian artist Susanna Blunt. It is distinguished by the absence of a crown and a more understated, contemporary depiction of the Sovereign. The inscription reads "ELIZABETH II D • G • REGINA," along with the date "2003" and the mint mark "P" (for plated steel).
