BU (MS-70) Perfect GEM

Description of the room

This Canadian 10-cent coin, dated 1993, is a standard circulation coin, but its condition and certification make it an exceptional collector's item. The timeless design of the "Bluenose," the famous racing schooner, is one of the most recognizable and beloved motifs in Canadian numismatics.

The example in question is a true gem, classified in the highest possible quality condition, which makes it extremely rare and desirable for any serious collector.

General characteristics

  • Face value: 10 cents

  • Year: 1993

  • Issuer: Canada

  • Composition: 99.9% nickel

  • Weight: 2.07 grams

  • Diameter: 18.03 mm

  • Shape: Round

  • Print run: 135,569,000 (which makes its perfect quality all the more difficult to find)

Obverse (reverse side)

The obverse of the coin, designed by the artist Dora de Pédery-Hunt, features a profile portrait of Queen Elizabeth II , her head crowned. The inscriptions "ELIZABETH II D·G·REGINA" surround the effigy. In perfect condition, this side should exhibit a full mirror luster, without the slightest trace of contact, scratching, or striking flaw, attesting to its impeccable quality.

Reverse (front side)

The reverse, a design by Emanuel Hahn, depicts the "Bluenose," Nova Scotia's legendary schooner and pride, sailing to port under full sail. The date, "1993," and the face value, "10 CENTS," are clearly visible. The word "CANADA" surrounds the design. In "Perfect GEM" condition, the relief of the ship and waves would be perfectly sharp, with a mirror-like luster that diffuses evenly across the entire surface of the coin.

Certification details

  • Grade: MS-70

  • Description of the grade:

    • MS (Mint State): The coin is in mint condition, having never circulated. It retains its original luster.

    • 70 (on the Sheldon scale): This is the highest possible grade. A coin graded MS-70 is considered technically perfect, free from any imperfections visible under magnification and to the naked eye. It exhibits complete luster and impeccable striking.

    • BU (Brilliant Uncirculated): This term describes a coin that has never circulated and has retained all of its original luster. It is a qualitative description that is confirmed by the numerical grade of MS-70 .

    • "Perfect GEM": This designation, often used by numismatists, is synonymous with the state of perfection represented by the MS-70 grade. It confirms that the coin is a "gem", without flaws and of the highest quality.

Acquiring a 10-cent coin from 1993 in such excellent condition is a rare opportunity, as it is extremely difficult for circulating coins of that era to achieve such perfection. Its value is therefore significantly higher than that of an ordinary coin.
