1982 Canada 1 Dollar - Constitution

Pure Nickel — MS-65 Grade (Gem)

Description of the room

This commemorative dollar celebrates the repatriation of the Constitution of Canada, a major political event that occurred on April 17, 1982. Achieving MS-65 grade for a pure nickel dollar from this era is a numismatic challenge, as these large coins were prone to contact marks during bulk transport to the Mint.

The Reverse Pattern

The design is the work of artist Robert-Ralph Carmichael. It depicts the historic scene of the signing of the Constitution in front of the Centre Block of the Parliament Buildings in Ottawa. In Gem quality, the details of the figures gathered around the table and the neo-Gothic architecture of Parliament are exceptionally sharp. The double dates "1867-1982" and the inscription "CONSTITUTION" complete this symbolic reverse.

The Obverse

The obverse features the classic portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Arnold Machin. At this level of preservation, the coin's fields have a uniform, satin finish, without the scratches or tarnish often found on lower-quality examples.

Quality and Grade MS-65 (Gem)

The MS-65 grade defines a Gem quality coin:

  • Chandelier: The original chandelier of the Mint is complete, vibrant and uninterrupted.

  • Surface: Contact marks are insignificant and do not detract from the overall beauty of the design. The edges are exceptionally clean for a piece of this size.

  • Strike: The strike is vigorous and well-centered, ensuring that all elements of Carmichael's design stand out with relief and clarity.

  • Visual appeal: Remarkable. This is a "high-end" example representing the elite of the 1982 circulation mintages.
