NBU (PL-65) GEM - PROOF-LIKE

Description of the room

This 1974 Canadian 25-cent coin is graded PL-65 (Proof-Like 65) , placing it in the "GEM" (Jewel) category of numismatic finishes. The term NBU ( Numismatic Brilliant Uncirculated or Non-Circulated) distinguishes this coin from standard circulation coins.

Coins with the Proof-Like (PL) finish are struck with specially prepared dies, giving them a mirror-like surface and frosted patterns, although this finish is less contrasted than Proof (proof) finishes.

The coin is a regular issue, featuring the classic Caribou motif on the reverse, designed by Emanuel Hahn. It is composed of pure nickel (99.9% nickel).

PL-65 Quality (Proof-Like 65)

The PL-65 grade is a higher grade in the Proof-Like category:

  • Luster and Field: The field of the coin is bright and reflective , with a very pronounced mirror effect on both the obverse and reverse.

  • Strike: The strike is crisp and complete , with excellent definition on all details.

  • Imperfections: A PL-65 piece is considered a gem due to its Proof-Like finish. It may show some minimal contact marks or very slight storage traces, visible under bright lighting, but which do not affect the piece's visual appeal.

  • Visual Appeal: The overall appearance is exceptional and the mirror effect is highly sought after.

The obverse features the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II .
