Description of the room

This 1974 Canadian 25-cent coin is graded AU (Almost Uncirculated) . This designation covers grades AU-50 to AU-58 on the Sheldon scale and indicates that the coin has circulated very briefly or has been handled in a way that has caused slight but noticeable wear on its highest points.

The coin is a regular issue, with the classic Caribou design on the reverse, and is made of pure nickel (99.9% nickel).

AU quality (Almost Uncirculated)

The AU condition is characterized by preservation of the majority of the striking luster, but with signs of wear.

  • Wear: There is slight but distinct wear on the high points of the design. For this piece, this typically affects:

    • The upper part of the caribou antlers (reverse).

    • The diadem (crown) and hair of Queen Elizabeth II (obverse).

  • Luster: More than half (often 50 to 90%) of the original striking luster is still present.

  • Imperfections: The piece may show light to moderate contact marks, but the main indicator of this condition is slight abrasion due to a short period of circulation.

  • AU-50: Obvious signs of wear, approximately 50% of the luster remaining.

  • AU-58 (Slider): Extremely light wear, visible only on the highest points and with almost all of the luster remaining.

The obverse features the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II .
