Description of the room

This 1964 commemorative dollar is an iconic piece in Canadian numismatic history. It marks the 100th anniversary of the 1864 meetings that led to Confederation in 1867. The Cameo design adds a rare and sought-after aesthetic dimension to this issue.

The Reverse Motif: The motif created by Thomas Shingles features a unique circular composition where the emblems of the four founding peoples are intertwined: the fleur-de-lis, the rose, the thistle, and the shamrock. At the center of the circle are the names of the two host cities, Charlottetown and Quebec City. This design symbolizes the harmony and unity necessary for the birth of the nation.

The obverse features the first portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II used on Canadian coins, with the Latin legend Elizabeth II Dei Gratia Regina. On a specimen of this grade, the details of the hair are remarkably precise.

The Cameo Distinction and the PL-67 Grade: The term Cameo signifies a striking visual contrast between the designs and the background of the coin. The raised areas (the design and lettering) have a frosted, matte appearance, while the fields (the flat background) have a highly reflective, mirror-like finish. A PL-67 (Proof-Like) grade indicates a coin of exceptional quality, virtually free of contact marks, with a brilliant original luster that perfectly showcases the Cameo contrast effect.
